Solar AMCs: what annual maintenance actually covers, and when it is worth paying for

A solar plant needs little care, but not zero. What a proper annual contract includes, what it should cost relative to your system, and the neglect it prevents.

Solar's low maintenance is real, and it becomes a trap when low quietly turns into none. Panels lose a silent percentage to soiling, connections loosen by thermal cycling, and small faults compound into inverter failures. An annual maintenance contract is how owners buy back the attention they will not remember to give. Here is what a proper one contains.

What a real AMC visit includes

Panel cleaning with soft water and correct technique. Thermal and visual inspection of panels for hot spots and micro-crack symptoms. Torque checks on structure fasteners and a corrosion review, which coastal Kerala makes mandatory rather than cosmetic. Inverter health check: logs, error history, ventilation and connections. Earthing resistance measurement and surge protection device verification. String current and voltage measurements to catch underperforming sections. And a generation audit against expected output for your location, which is the single test that summarises all the others.

What it should cost, and what it saves

Residential AMCs in Kerala typically run a small fraction of a percent of system cost per year, a few thousand rupees for home systems. Against that: a 10 percent soiling loss on a 5 kW system wastes roughly 700 units a year, and one prevented inverter failure outside warranty pays for many years of visits. The economics favour the AMC for anyone who will not personally climb the roof with a soft brush every few weeks, which is nearly everyone.

SEDNA services systems we installed and systems we did not. The second category keeps our auditors busiest, and it is where the before-and-after generation numbers make the strongest case for scheduled care.
