The 3 kW system is Kerala's sweet spot: it fits most roofs, covers bills in the ₹2,000 to ₹3,500 range, and takes the full ₹78,000 central subsidy. This is the honest timeline from first call to first solar bill.
Week 1: survey and design
A free site visit measures the roof, checks shading across the day and looks at your last few KSEB bills. You get a quotation naming the exact panel brand, panel count, inverter model and structure type. Nothing generic, because the warranty claims of year ten depend on what is written here.
Week 2: paperwork
The PM Surya Ghar application and KSEB feasibility request go in, linked to your consumer number. This step is mostly waiting on approvals, and it runs in parallel with material procurement.
Weeks 3 to 4: installation and commissioning
The physical installation of a 3 kW system takes 2 to 3 days: structure first, then panels, then the inverter, earthing and protective devices. After installation, KSEB inspects, the bidirectional meter is installed, and net metering is commissioned. From there, your exports start earning credit automatically.
The most common delay in the whole process is not the installation; it is meter availability at the local KSEB section office. We follow up on it so you do not have to, but it is worth knowing where the waiting usually happens.
