Solar installed, but the power still went out? Here is why

The most common surprise for new on-grid owners in Kerala. Your system is working exactly as designed, and there is a good reason it switches off.

You installed solar, the sun is shining, and KSEB's supply failed. Your lights went out anyway. Almost every new on-grid customer calls us about this once, so here is the honest explanation.

Why on-grid systems switch off in a power cut

Grid-tied inverters are required to shut down the moment grid supply fails. The feature is called anti-islanding, and it exists to protect the KSEB lineman working on the line that your roof would otherwise be feeding. Every certified inverter in the country behaves this way. It is a safety standard, not a defect.

Your options if power cuts matter to you

A hybrid system adds a battery so essential loads keep running while the grid is down, and still exports excess power to KSEB on normal days. A full off-grid system removes the grid from the picture entirely. Both add battery cost, and batteries need replacement every 5 to 6 years, so the right answer depends on how often your area actually loses power.

In our surveys we ask exactly this question about your locality before recommending a system type. If outages in your area are rare, paying for batteries to cover them is money better left in your pocket.
